Rachio Smart Hose Timer with Alexa Routine

Hello sirs at Rachio,

I have a pest problem. Four cats are constantly pooping on my front yard. Their poop of course smells terrible, and it attracts flies. They generally come after midnight and in the morning. I would like to know if the following is possible:

  1. Detect motion with my Wyze cam v4, to trigger an Alexa Routine, only at those hours.
  2. Have Alexa instruct a Rachio Smart Hose Timer to open.
  3. Spray abusive cat with a sprinkler
  4. Shut off Rachio Smart hose Timer after about 10 seconds, all set to receive the next cat.

I live in El Salvador… I hope that is not a problem for the timer’s functionality. I only intend to use it as a smart shutoff valve.

Best regards,

Eduardo Barillas

I have a problem with neighbor’s, their kids, their dogs, delivery people and with wildlife that walk, ride, cut across and leave things on my front lawn and flower beds. I created an Alexa routine such that, when my front yard Arlo Pro 2 camera senses motion, it triggers that lawn watering station on my Rachio 3 controller for 30 seconds.

I call the routine, “Critter Ridder”. Works great! With one caveat: There is about a 12 second delay between the motion sensor registering, sending the information to the Arlo servers, routing it back to my house and triggering the Rachio controller.

I originally tested this using the same Arlo camera and a non-Rachio smart shutoff valve combined with a hose and an impact sprinkler. I had to use Google Home though because Alexa didn’t have a skill for the shutoff valve I was using. That thing not only blasted a huge amount of water. The “rat-ta-tat-tat” sound from the impact sprinkler firing up suddenly scared people and critters. I would have kept it but, I didn’t want to leave a hose laying out across the yard like that.

If anyone complained, like the UPS guy that cuts across my yard, I’d just tell them that I was deterring cats and racoons from using my flower beds as potties. And that they should just be using the sidewalk and walkway anyway, and not cutting across my yard.

I see that there is a Wyze skill on Alexa so, you should be able to do the same thing with your Wyze camera’s motion detector and a Rachio Smart Hose timer.

Thanks for the answer! Glad to know that the concept works. I’ll try it out and I’ll report back if it is successful! You are right about the time delay… I’ll try to adjust the detection zone to gain a couple of seconds.
