Rachio does not report the root cause for zone fault detected error

My Rachio 3 power adapter failed multiple times. Every failure, I received multiple messages about Zone Fault Detected failure. Error messages were for almost all the zones and information provided by Rachio did not help to figure out the root cause.

I had a 9 year old Rainbird controller and I ended up using it. Rainbird gave me an error message that master valve pump shorted/ high current and I ended up checking master valve. Rainbird message was accurate and master solenoid had failed. After I replaced it, Rainbird started working fine. Rainbird power adapter did not fail even though master valve was shorted.

I would like to suggest two improvements

  1. Rachio needs to improve the error debugging capability
  2. It should not fail if solenoid valve has shorted
