Hello Ranchio Community,
I would like to be accurate about my soil type on the app. If I purchase the MySoil Test Kit w/probe, would the test results indicate the soil type. i.e: sand/Loam/Clay.?
Thank you,
John
Hello Ranchio Community,

Generally, soil test kits measure the available nutrients or chemical composition (acidity, etc.) of your soil for purposes of growing something. Irrigation, if done right, needs the characteristics important for holding water - through the entire soil profile, down to the root depth you need and beyond. It’s likely, except for specially prepared garden areas, that your whole property’s profile is the same, and you can find out the “class” of soil you have under you from official sources. In the US, that’s the Department of Agriculture’s Web Soil Survey.
Give it a try, and you’ll have more than enough information about selecting the most reasonable answer to your soil type settings. This forum contains lots of suggestions related to your question too. There’s very likely someone nearby with a Rachio who’s figured it out for you - just ask.
Here’s a copy of my latest soil test report from late October: Soil Test Report.pdf (204.4 KB)
Obviously it’s of no real use to you (unless you’re somehow my neighbor?), but it might be helpful as an example of the data you’ll get from a test.
Agreed that the Web Soil Survey is going to be your best bet for soil type - that’s how I ended up determining what my setting was going to be.
