How to transition from frequent to deep waterings

I have been using my Rachio 3 controller for several years. Overall, I have had great success with it. I live in SoCal in Zone 9b. Upper 90’s, low 100’s for most of the summer. I have Tall Fescue and it always takes a hit during the summer. I have one section in my lawn that looked worse than the others and got me thinking that something was off with my Flex Schedules.

Last year I determined my soil type and AWC with the help of the web soil survey. I thought that was the best way to determine it. Though, I did the mason jar test three weeks ago and came up with different results. I am guessing the mason jar test is more real world results so I changed the soil type to “Silty Loam” and the AWC to match. In doing so, my run times got much longer and less frequent.

Now my lawn has taken a real hit because it is going longer in between waterings and this summer heat is not helping. So with that being the case, how long will it take the grass to adjust to this new watering schedule?

Should I let it pan out or make some adjustments to root depth, etc…. I knew I was playing with fire messing with these settings mid summer.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @only6foot6. Would you mind sharing links regarding “web soil survey” and the mason jar test? It seems like something I need to do.

Hi @DrStorm - I missed your question from two months ago. Regarding the Mason Jar Test - there are several good documents/videos on Internet that document this process. I found this one quite helpful. There is YouTube video as well:

@azdavidr did an amazing write up on how to use the soil survey to define your soil settings. You can find it here:
