I’ve been using a 16 zone Rachio 3 unit for several years and it just recently died (9 white 1 red critical software update error). It is out of warranty, so I had to purchase another unit. We were only using 12 of the existing 16 zones, so I replaced the unit with a 12 zone unit from Costco.
I looked into transferring the settings from the old unit to the new and even used the Rachio chat assistant to verify it was doable (see screenshot).
After spending way too much time trying to figure out how I kept missing the “Transfer Settings” option when installing the new unit, I dug through some older threads here and discovered that transferring settings only works if you move to a controller with an equal or greater number of zones.
Now to rant a bit… Some of these threads are 7+ yrs old so customers have been complaining about it for at least that long. If it’s not an issue Rachio feels is worthwhile to address (although with the increasing size of the installed base, it has to be a more frequent problem), at a minimum please include the details and limitations in the tech support response.
@Franz: In some of those older threads, Tech support facilitated the settings transfer on their end. Is that something Rachio will still do?
