Looking at the “Compare Similar Irrigation Controllers” section at Rachio R3 Smart Irrigation Controller, 6 Zone 6ZULW-C (homedepot.com), it is 6 vs. 8 zones respectively with a 16 available AND of course the price. For me, I got more zones than I thought I would need and it definitely paid off as it is looking like I will use them all.
