New installation Problem

Hi. I just replaced an old Hunter Pro-C with the Rachio 3.

The system was just opened up last week by my irrigation company and tested. Everything worked on the Pro-C.

Now, with the Rachio, 5 of 12 zones failed to water during setup.

What could possibly cause this since the old system was working just prior to switchover?

Do you happen to have before (Pro-C) and after (R3) pictures?

I have some. I am sure the wiring is good. It’s fairly straight forward (I wired my own house for reference).

I have no Master valve, a single common wire and the 12 zones. I Disconnected the rain sensor to eliminate that as a potential issue.

The strange thing is the randomness of the failures. It’s very sporadic. (IE zone 1,2,6,7,9, 11 not working across two exterior valve boxes.

Could the connections be not good, such as oxidation, broken wires, crimping to insulation instead of wire, etc.? Do you happen to have a multimeter to do some tests or the valve monitoring feature?

Hi Thomas,

I tested the zones using a multimeter and there is continuity, but low ohm readings on certain zones.

What’s strange is all zones worked fine 10 minutes before changeover using the Pro-C.

Is the Rachio more sensitive to weak solenoids?

Not that I know of.

Just an FYI, in case you ever run into this. The Rachio board did not like the older (and presumably weaker) solenoids. Had to replace 6 out of 12 and all worked perfectly.

They worked fine with the Pro-C, but not the Rachio.

Strange indeed.

Do you happen to know the brand and model of the old valves?
