You must have missed the paragraph after the picture.
You can see the valve box immediately adjacent to the downpipe. The downpipe is attached to a 90° elbow about 18" underground, to which the valve body is attached and from where numerous vinyl irrigation pipes spread out around the property. It appears that the soil was not fully compacted when the irrigation was installed twenty years ago, and so the whole thing sank over time, pulling the copper downpipe with it.
Who would have guessed?
