I know hardware changes are a big deal. Many of the complaints with WiFi I see could be fixed with an external antenna option. This would also need a software update to select internal or external antenna. This way the customer could select the antenna and the proper db gain for the situation, and place the antenna in an optimal position to receive the signal.
I would buy a new unit just for this option.
