Cannot get rain sensor wires to push into slots on Gen2 box

I was able to replace my current controller yesterday with a Gen2 unit and am thrilled that I was able to do this myself without too many issues, however I do have one. The wireless rain sensor wires are too thin to push into the wiring ports. I tried everything I could but it just takes too much force to get the wires installed and these are not thick enough.

Any ideas outside of outright replacing my sensor??

If stranded, tin the wires? Another option is to connect the skinny wires to heavier gauge wires with wire nuts and push the heavier gauge wires in.
