Bermuda to Rye Overseeding Thread

Now that I know that de-thatching shouldn’t be done this late in the year, I will certainly be diligent about doing it mid summer next year, but this year, I really should de-thatch. Anyone see a problem with a little work this late in the season? I have a pull behind tine de-thatcher if that makes a difference…maybe not as aggressive?

@tmcgahey

This page may have been referenced in another thread, but it has some good info on why not to dethatch in the fall. If you must, I would say a very light one. Also, do it ASAP so you have more days of growth for your bermuda to repair itself.

We went to a big park up in anthem today and they were overseeding right now… which in turn close down the train which did not make my kid very happy

Another possibility might be to check with the U of A extension since they have been doing research on different varieties.

And maybe push the overseeding out a week or so ?

lol, i live in anthem and was noticing the same thing. they are pretty strict on homeowners so that is why i purchased the rachio. the 400 dollar bill for the first months water was killer, i’m down to 250-300 for now and trying to get it lower.

i probably won’t overseed though since i just have back yard grass.

That’s still a very high water bill. I’m only a few miles down the road from you and my highest was 120. How much of that bill is water vs other things like trash, sewer, etc? Does Phoenix Water service your water needs in Anthem?

Have you considered artificial turf? I am all for turfgrass, but it such high maintenance in Phoenix. They have new stuff out that stays cool to the touch, even in the desert and looks so realistic Then have plenty of beds with great desert color

Anthem must be on the west side of Phoenix. I lived in north Scottsdale. Will look it up on the map.

@robertokc You may have already looked it up but it’s like 10 miles up the 17th, north of the 101… if you even know what the 101 is, not sure how long long ago you lived here. I grew up in North Scottsdale and there was no such thing as the 101.

@Modawg2k - I always assumed that living in Arizona you would pay a lot for your water — but now I think NC makes me pay WAY more! – My worst water bill (for irrigation only) last year was $431 for 56 ccf!!! One of the reasons I went to Rachio! And even with Rachio, I had one this year using 42 CCF that was $198!

That’s worse than my highest electric bill during the hottest summer month

I’ve never understood why some water utilities continue to hang onto the ccf versus gallons billing Natural gas makes sense for ccf. When I think water I think gallons. What ye say?

I did look it up and now I remember seeing it during 2007. The traffic on 17 must be unreal now with all the growth up there. But the 101 was great to get around Phoenix. And I liked Sky Harbor Airport and the Camelback section east of Central.

Right now I am getting my fescue and Texas bluegrass seed to come up. We got an unexpected spike in temperatures to the high 90s this week

Have been following this thread with interest (and have learnt a lot about irrigation in general from the Rachio Community). Thought I’d share a potential complementary site about lawn care I stumbled upon: http://aroundtheyard.com/ (forums at http://aroundtheyard.com/forum.html)

I have no personal affiliation with that site, just sharing for those who might be interested.

Nice, I’ll have to check this out. I tried following a lawn care forum once and it was more geared towards landscapers who discussed random stuff like keeping their customers on once a week mowings, etc.

I costs me about $7 to fill my front yard (every bit of 6000sq ft of lawn) with 8" of water thanks to the flood irrigation system we have in parts of Arizona. I can irrigate every 14 days if I am home and it saves me a TON compared to sprinkling my front lawn.

I remember this very well. There used to be many more canals. Just north of my church at Central and Bethany Home Road there were neighborhoods with extensive flood irrigation. Even in the horrendous summer heat those landscapes looked just fine. Guess that is part of the original Salt River Project irrigation canal system.

Shows where assumptions get me!!! :smirk:

@Modawg2k @Isriam For what it’s worth, I just paid $105 to the City of Phoenix for August. About $65 of that was for the 17,204 gallons I used. The rest was for sewage and non-water taxes.
